Curral do Negro was born out of a deep love for a special spot in the Serra da Estrela. Situated at an altitude of approximately 1,000 metres, above the town of Gouveia, the park combines nature, tranquillity and breathtaking views over the Mondego valley and the northern slope of the mountain range. With its wooded areas, leisure facilities and spaces for traditional camping and glamping, Curral do Negro has been designed to offer genuine moments of relaxation and connection with nature.
The history of the campsite is closely linked to our family’s history. Originally from the Minho region in Northern Portugal, we were regular visitors to Curral do Negro, our favourite campsite for many years. In August 2017, we returned to Gouveia for a camping holiday and found the campsite abandoned. The shock of that moment coincided with a period of change in our lives and sparked an unexpected idea: to try to breathe new life into the place that had given us so many memories.
A few months later, the wildfires of October 2017 further worsened the park’s condition, destroying vegetation and infrastructure. Despite the difficulties, we decided not to give up. Our love for Curral do Negro won out, and we believed in its rebirth. In July 2019, the whole family arrived with all our belongings to begin a new chapter: to rebuild, restore and return this space to nature, to visitors and to the community.
